Artificial Intelligence (AI) can uncover irregularities in datasets (eg bids, e-mails), bolster due diligence, and flag suspicious activities for in-depth investigation. It also facilitates accountability and information sharing, empowering women and enhancing the resilience of individuals in vulnerable positions. However, AI can also undermine democratic systems, facilitate the movement of Illicit Financial Flows (IFF), execute complex fraud schemes, and help identify and circumvent vulnerabilities in compliance systems. Furthermore, the risk of bias within algorithms poses a significant threat to gender equality and inclusivity.

This seminar provides a dedicated forum designed to stimulate thoughtful discussions, direct future research on the use of AI in anti-corruption efforts, and influence both policy and practice. The seminar will focus on two main aspects: the evolution of fraud and corruption practices facilitated by AI technology, and the strategies public and private organisations, as well as Civil Society Organisations, can employ to respond effectively.

Giovanni Leoni will discuss the strategic risks and opportunities that artificial intelligence represents for public and private integrity. Additionally, Fernanda Odilla and Carolina Gerli will lead discussions on the role of public organisations and civil society in this context.

Giovanni Leoni, Head of Business Strategy & Development, Credo AI

Giovanni leads strategic and business development initiatives for Credo AI, a private company that offers services within AI Governance, AI Risk Management and AI Compliance. For more than 20 years he has been active across multiple sectors, private and public, developing process, data and AI to be more efficient and responsible while actively contributing to the global responsible AI community through public speaking and engagement in various forums and bodies. He is a Board Member for Transparency International Sweden, member of the Nordic Ethical AI Expert Group as well as several working groups within the AI Governance Alliance at the World Economic Forum.

Carolina Gerli, Visiting PhD Scholar at TalTech University in Estonia, and PhD Candidate, at the University of Bologna

Carolina’s PhD focuses on the use of AI in public organizations to tackle public procurement corruption. She previously worked for PwC Italy on government digital transformation projects. She holds a Master degree in Economics and Management of Public Administrations from Bocconi University (Italy).

Fernanda Odilla, Researcher on Anti-Corruption and AI, at the University of Bologna

Fernanda is a lecturer at the University of Bologna. She is working on a European Research Council-funded project on social accountability and anti-corruption technologies and will be joining soon the research project RESPOND, which focuses on new approaches for combatting corruption in political decision-making. She holds a PhD in Social Sciences and Public Policy and a Master's degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice from King's College London. She is the author of the book The Digitalisation of Anti-Corruption in Brazil: Scandals, Reforms and Innovation, forthcoming from Routledge.in Brazil: Scandals, Reforms and Innovation, forthcoming from Routledge.
